What to Do in Cancun When Beaches Are Infested by Sargassum Seaweed: Activities, Hotels & Best Spots

You’ve finally booked that dream trip to the Riviera Maya, only to arrive and find the turquoise water choked with brown seaweed, the air tinged with the smell of sulfur, and red flags waving along the coast. Unfortunately, the arrival of sargassum has become an annual challenge for beachgoers in Mexico’s Caribbean.

I have lived here for more than a decade, and I know it very well, however, for as much as I love going to the beach. I mean, this is the main reason why I moved to the whdon’t cancel your plans just yet, for two reasons. First of all, there are beaches that are not usually affected, though some unfortunate exceptions exist.

And secondly, the Riviera Maya is far more than just its beachfront. Between crystal-clear cenotes, offshore islands, eco-adventure parks, and ancient Mayan ruins, endless sargassum-free experiences are waiting to be explored.

Besides, if you love pools, many hotels feature infinity pools and top-notch amenities that can easily replace the soothing Caribbean sea. That is, if you come to Mexico for reasons other than the usual turquoise waters of the Caribbean coastline. This guide will show you where to go and what to do when seaweed crashes the party.

In this guide, I will share some useful tips on what to do if your beach has been infested by sargassum. Keep reading for some helpful insider tips.

Why Sargassum Hits Riviera Maya Beaches

Before diving into my travel tips, let’s talk about what Sargassum is and which areas are affected. Sargassum is a type of brown macroalgae that floats in massive mats across the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in the Sargasso Sea. Due to warming ocean temperatures, changes in currents, and nutrient-rich runoff, the Yucatán Peninsula’s Caribbean shores, especially Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Akumal to Cancun, now experience large seasonal seaweed landings from May to October, peaking in mid-summer.

While some beaches fight back with barriers and cleanup crews, others are naturally sheltered or offer entirely different inland experiences.

    Sargassum-Free Beaches to Consider

Before moving on to what to do when the beach is inaccessible, let’s check out some beaches that rarely get affected.

🏝️ Isla Mujeres – Playa Norte

Protected by the island’s geography, Playa Norte stays remarkably clear all year. Its shallow, calm water is ideal for swimming and relaxing without stepping through piles of seaweed.

This year, Playa norte was strangely affected by the sargasso, and a huge mass of algae was covering the normally white sand beach and turquoise waters, but it lasted only a few day,s and it’s now back to its original colors

    Isla Mujeres Beach

    🏖️ Cancun Playa Mujeres

These beaches, located on the more sheltered northern side of Cancun, usually experience minimal seaweed and are kept pristine by hotel staff. The beach is lined by a new settlement of beautiful high-end hotels that offer top-notch service and a secluded stay.

    🌊 Puerto Morelos

This charming town sits behind a protective barrier reef that diverts much of the incoming sargassum. The beach near the marina and downtown is often clear and less crowded than Cancun or Playa del Carmen (except on Sundays)

A pristine beach with turquoise water, a lighthouse, and scattered palm trees under a bright blue sky. Small boats dot the shoreline.

    🏝️ Holbox & Isla Contoy

To the north of Riviera Maya, Holbox’s main beach and Contoy’s untouched coastlines escape the sargassum belt. Great for wildlife watching and total relaxation. While in Holbox, you can enjoy a long stay; Isla Contoy can be reached only by a tour from Cancun. If you are staying in Cancun, it makes a great day trip.

Sandy beach with turquoise waves under a cloudy sky, bordered by a simple fence along the shoreline, creating a serene coastal scene.

    🏖️ Paamul

Just a short drive from Playa del Carmen, Paamul Beach is one of those calm, tucked-away spots that often escape the worst of the sargassum. The bay is protected by a natural reef, which keeps the water clearer and calmer than most open beaches.

It’s a mix of sand and coral, so bring water shoes, but the snorkeling is fantastic — you can often spot colorful fish just a few meters from shore. There’s also a small beach club and restaurant where you can spend the day relaxing with a cold drink and enjoy the sea without the crowds.

It’s actually one of my favorite places to go and unwind, even if it has become a bit expensive nowadays. There is a minimum spend of 500 MXN + 200 per person if you want to use the facilities.

Tropical beach with clear blue water and palm trees.

    🏖️ Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras Beach is a peaceful spot on the Riviera Maya, about 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. The beach sits in a small bay with calm turquoise water and soft white sand, perfect for swimming or relaxing away from the busier resort areas. It’s part of a gated marina community, so access is limited.

In fact, you need to have an invitation from a local of a reservation to a local restaurant. They will send you a QR code to show at gate security, along with an ID.

I have spent quite a bit of time in this community, housesitting for a friend of mine who lives here, and I can say it’s one of my favorite spots in the Riviera Maya. Definitely recommend spending a day there.

The beach also gets hit by the sargassum, but it’s occasional, and you can always find a spot that’s weed-free.

Reaching Puerto Aventuras is easy by car—just follow Highway 307 from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. It’s an ideal stop for a quiet day by the sea with a laid-back local vibe.

    🏝️ Isla Blanca – Cancun’s Hidden Paradise

Aerial view of a pristine beach with turquoise waters and sandy shoreline, bordered by lush greenery under a blue sky with scattered clouds.

Just 25 minutes north of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, Isla Blanca is a peaceful strip of white sand between the Caribbean Sea and the Chacmoch Lagoon, usually sargasso-free. This undeveloped gem is perfect when you want to escape the crowds and the sargassum-covered beaches. The water is usually calm and clear, ideal for kitesurfing, swimming, or simply relaxing by the shore. There are no big resorts here — just nature, sea breeze, and a few beach shacks serving fresh ceviche. Bring your own shade, snacks, and enjoy one of Cancun’s best-kept secrets before it becomes the next big thing.

    Inland & Activity-Based Escapes

    💧 Cenote Adventures

When the sea turns brown, head underground — literally. The Yucatán Peninsula’s cenotes are freshwater sinkholes formed when limestone caves collapsed, revealing crystal-clear pools connected by an underground river system. They’re completely sargassum-free, refreshingly cool, and perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or even diving.

Each cenote has its own charm:

    • Cenote Choo-ha in Coba, one of my favorites, where you can swim among stalagmites and stalactites with not so much crowd.
    • Dos Ojos: Famous among divers for its cave systems and incredible visibility. The two connected “eyes” of this cenote glow turquoise in the light.
    • Gran Cenote: One of the most popular near Tulum. Really beautiful for its rock formations and bridges, but a bit crowded to my taste. Go super early if you want to enjoy it best.
    • Cenote Cristal and Escondido, two of my favorites near Tulum. I love the platforms where you can jump or float in the cenotes and relax by the water’s edge.

Most cenotes are located in lush jungle settings and are well-organized, offering changing rooms, showers, lockers, and guided tours for safe exploration. Some even have small cafés or picnic areas. It’s a refreshing, magical way to enjoy Mexico’s nature when the beach isn’t an option — and honestly, many travelers end up loving these freshwater paradises even more.

    🌿 Eco & Adventure Parks

Adventure parks like Xcaret, Xplor, and Xel-Há are built around underground rivers, cenotes, ziplines, and jungle trails, far from seaweed-invaded beaches. They offer:

    • Tubing and rafting in freshwater
    • Zip-lining and ATV courses
    • Cultural performances and wildlife exhibits

You can easily spend an entire day in one of these parks and never miss the ocean.

I would recommend getting a GoCity Cancun Pass if you plan to join multiple tours, as it can save you a few bucks.

    Visit the ancient Mayan sites

🏛️ Tulum Ruins – Ancient Walls with a View

Ancient ruins by the sea under clear blue sky.
    Tulum Archaeological Site

Even if sargassum has taken over the shoreline, Tulum’s ruins still offer one of the most breathtaking views in Mexico. This walled city was once a major Mayan port that traded turquoise and jade, and it’s one of the few ruins right by the sea.
You can wander through the temples surrounded by iguanas basking in the sun, admire the detailed carvings of the Temple of the Frescoes, and climb up near El Castillo for sweeping views of the Caribbean. The beach below may be covered in seaweed, but the turquoise horizon beyond it still looks magical in photos.

TIP: Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds and the midday heat.

🏛️ Coba – Hidden Pyramids in the Jungle

A stone pyramid structure, surrounded by trees, stands under a blue sky. A wooden sign reads "XAIKBE" pointing toward the archaeological site.

If you’re craving a bit of adventure away from the coast, Coba is perfect. It’s tucked deep in the jungle, about 45 minutes from Tulum, and feels wild and mysterious.

Rent a bike or hop on a tricycle taxi to explore the ancient sacbeob, the Mayan white stone roads that once connected the city to nearby villages.

The whole place is surrounded by jungle sounds — cicadas, birds, and the occasional howler monkey — giving it a true Indiana Jones vibe.

Tip: Combine your visit with a stop at a nearby cenote like Cenote Choo-Ha for a refreshing dip after exploring.

🏛️ Chichén Itzá – The Iconic Wonder

People walking near the ancient Mayan pyramid, El Castillo, at Chichen Itza under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds and lush greenery.

If seaweed has you skipping beach days, Chichén Itzá makes a perfect inland day trip. It’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO site for good reason.

You’ll be amazed by the symmetry of El Castillo (Temple of Kukulcán), where during the equinox, the sun casts the shadow of a serpent slithering down the pyramid.

Explore the Temple of the Warriors, the Ball Court, and the Sacred Cenote, where Mayans once offered gifts to the gods.
Tip: Many tours from the Riviera Maya include a stop at a cenote and the colorful colonial town of Valladolid, so you can make a full day of it.

🏛️ Ek Balam – The Hidden Gem

Ancient Mayan ruins under a blue sky.

For a less crowded and more personal experience, Ek Balam is fantastic. It’s smaller and quieter than Chichén Itzá but incredibly detailed. The main pyramid, the Acropolis, can still be climbed, and from the top, you get a panoramic jungle view that stretches for miles.

The stucco carvings here are among the best-preserved in the region — you can still see intricate depictions of winged figures and Mayan rulers. Plus, the nearby Cenote X’Canche is just a short bike ride away, so you can cool off in crystal-clear water afterward.
Tip: Go early or late in the afternoon for soft light and great photos.

    Offshore & Water-Based Activities

Just because the beaches are full of seaweed doesn’t mean the sea is off-limits. Many offshore excursions operate well beyond the sargassum zone.

🚤 Go Offshore – Clear Waters Beyond the Coast

When the shoreline is covered in sargassum, the trick is simple — head offshore. The seaweed mainly gathers along the coastline, so once you’re a few hundred meters out, the water turns back to that perfect Caribbean blue.

Here’s how to make the most of it:

    • Snorkel in Cozumel or Isla Mujeres: Both islands sit farther from the mainland, where sargassum rarely reaches. Cozumel’s Palancar Reef and Isla Mujeres’ Garrafon Natural Reef Park offer some of the clearest waters and most colorful coral gardens in the region.
    • Scuba Dive at the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef: This is the second-largest reef system in the world, stretching from Mexico down to Honduras. Dive spots like Pared Verde near Playa del Carmen or Santa Rosa Wall in Cozumel are famous for turtles, eagle rays, and brilliant corals.
    • Deep-Sea Fishing from Puerto Aventuras or Playa del Carmen: Charter a boat and spend the day in open water, where the only thing you’ll see floating is your fishing line. Sailfish, mahi-mahi, and barracuda are common catches.
    • Swim with Whale Sharks (June–September): During these months, you can join tours from Cancun or Isla Holbox to swim alongside these gentle giants. They gather offshore, far from any seaweed zones, in calm, crystal-clear waters.

Heading offshore is one of the best ways to escape sargassum and still enjoy the Riviera Maya’s marine life. The farther you go, the cleaner and bluer the water gets — a perfect reminder that paradise isn’t just on the beach.

  • My Absolute Favorite Way to Get From Cancun Airport to Hotel Zone [Or Anywhere]

My Absolute Favorite Way to Get From Cancun Airport to Hotel Zone [Or Anywhere]

If you’re wondering how to go from Cancún International Airport to the Hotel Zone, you’ve come to the right place. I live here and travel a lot, so I’ve tried out every way to make that trip—from the airport to the stretch of resorts, beaches, and vibrant nightlife in the Hotel Zone—and I know which options are worth your time, money, and sanity.

The first “real” adventure of your Cancún trip starts the moment you land: how to get from the airport to your hotel. There are lots of ways—some fast, some cheap, some comfortable, some… not so much.

I’ll walk you through everything so you can decide what fits you best. Let’s get you from the plane to the beach without stress.

Where Exactly Is the Hotel Zone?

The Zona Hotelera—or Hotel Zone—is about 14 miles (roughly 23 km) from the airport. It’s a narrow peninsula lined with beaches, resorts, restaurants, shops, and activity spots. Depending on where your hotel sits along that strip, it might be a little more or less distance.

Most travelers spend their whole trip here. Turquoise waters surround it, and the white sand beaches are stunning. Whether you’re relaxing, dining out, or exploring, there’s a lot packed into this area.

That’s me with my driver from Cancun Transportations

How Long Does It Take + What Slows You Down

    • If you go straight from the airport to a hotel in the Hotel Zone, expect 20 to 30 minutes under ideal conditions.
    • But: construction, traffic, or stops along the way (especially with shared rides) can slow you down.
    • Time of day matters. Morning or evening rush hour adds extra time.
    • Additionally, the location of your hotel within the Hotel Zone affects the travel time.

If speed and comfort are your priorities, a private, nonstop shuttle is your best bet. Shared shuttles or public transport will save money, but usually take much longer and are definitely not worth the money you save.

My Favorite Option: Private Shuttle 🚐

If it were me, A private Shuttle with Cancun Airport Transportation is what I’d pick every time. Comfortable, reliable, and gets you where you need to go fast.

What to expect from Cancun Airport Transportation.

    • They’re solid—lots of 5-star reviews and thumbs up around town.
    • Pricing: for 1–3 people, a car starts around US$39. Want something fancier, like an SUV? That bumps up to about US$55. Yes, it costs more, but after a long flight, your comfort is worth it.
    • What’s included: bilingual driver, insurance, minimal waiting at the airport, professional service, and the vehicle is exclusively for your party (no random drop-offs).

Booking in advance means someone is waiting for you at the correct terminal; they’ll send detailed meeting point instructions. It’s absolutely worth the peace of mind.

Other Options: What You Should Know

If you think you want to stay on the budget or have a little adventure, here are a few alternatives—and when they might make sense.

    OptionWhen It’s GoodProsCons
Shared ShuttleIf you want something more affordable than a private shuttle but more comfort than a busCheaper, semi-comfortable, pretty reliableStops for other passengers, slower, luggage handling less convenient
Bus / Public Transport (ADO + local bus)If your budget is tight and you have light luggageVery cheap, chance to see local lifeLong travel time, transfers, hauling bags, fewer amenities
Renting a CarIf you plan to explore beyond the Hotel Zone (cenotes, ruins, etc.)Freedom, convenience, saves on other transport costs sometimesMore expensive overall, need to drive/park, navigating required
Stretch Limo / Luxury TransferWhen you want lavish comfort or are celebrating somethingSuper comfortable, stylish experiencePricey, often more than you really need for just arrival
TaxiOnly really if you decide last minute and can’t book anything elseReadily availableExpensive, possible overcharging, uncomfortable negotiation, similar price to private shuttle without perks

My Verdict (What I’d Do Every Time)

For most folks, the best balance is a private shuttle. Yes, you spend more than the public bus, but for the extra cost you get:

    • Less stress right after you land
    • Someone waiting for you—no wandering baggage terminals
    • Comfort, air conditioning, privacy
    • Speed—getting you to the hotel (and the beach) faster

If I were landing at Cancún myself, dragging heavy bags and itching to get into the sun, I’d pay the extra for the private ride. Totally worth it.

Final Thoughts: Best Transfer from Cancun Airport to Hotel Zone

If you want the least stress, quickest transfer, and don’t mind spending a bit extra, go private. The ride is smoother, the welcome is nicer, and you reach the beach faster.

But if your budget is tight, you’re okay with a bit of time and don’t mind handling bags, shared shuttles or buses get you there for less.

No matter which way you choose, enjoy every minute of Cancún. The beaches, the sun, the margaritas—they’re waiting for you.

The Truth About Seaweed in Cancun And The Riviera Maya and How to Avoid It Like a Pro

Wondering when the Cancun Seaweed Season starts? You have landed in the right place. In this post, we will provide you with all the information you need to plan your vacation accordingly.

When you are planning a beach vacation, one of the last things you want to hear is seaweed.

Unfortunately, the last few years have seen an increase in the amount of seaweed that washes ashore in Cancun.

The good news is that there are always seaweed-free beaches, and seaweed is not typically a problem all year. With some knowledge about the seaweed situation and the use of seaweed tracking sites, you should be able to find clean beaches to enjoy.

Finding seaweed-infested beaches during your long-awaited vacation is not ideal, but you can still travel to Cancun and find its pristine white sand beaches all year round if you know where to go.

Keep reading to learn all about the Cancun seaweed season and how to make sure you have a great beach vacation!

When is seaweed season in Cancun?

Seaweed season in Cancun usually starts in May and goes on all summer until October, but it’s never so precise. And it’s not everywhere.

If you are traveling to Cancun or the Riviera Maya in these months, although it’s something that shouldn’t hold you back, you may want to learn about the hotels and beaches that are less affected by the sargassum.

And this is precisely what we’ll be talking about in this post.

    Seaweed in Cancun: An Overview

In recent years, there has been an increase in the amount of seaweed that washes ashore in Cancun. There are certain times of the year when it is more common for there to be seaweed on the beach, but the fact is, small amounts of seaweed can arrive at any time.

The beach conditions can change quickly, and the arrival of seaweed is dependent on many factors, including wind and currents.

As a visitor to the Cancun area, the most important thing you need to know is this: Will the seaweed affect my vacation, and can I find seaweed-free beaches?

The great news is that you can almost always find seaweed-free beaches to enjoy. The amount of seaweed on the beach and how much it will affect you change constantly.

There are times when a small patch of dried seaweed needs to be stepped over before reaching the waterline. Other times, the beach may have a lot of seaweed but clean water. On rare occasions, large patches of seaweed can be found on the beach and floating in the water.

A small amount of dried sargassum, while not ideal, will not ruin your day at the beach. If you have the bad luck of arriving at a beach with lots of seaweed on the beach and in the water, you will not want to hang around.

With a little knowledge about where the seaweed is most likely to wash ashore, as well as some online resources that update seaweed conditions daily, you can plan a beach vacation, even in seaweed season.

Below, I will explain what exactly seaweed is and why it is here, as well as what the government is doing to deal with it.

Most importantly, I will help you learn how to enjoy a great vacation, regardless of the seaweed.

    What is Sargassum Cancun Seaweed?

The seaweed that washes ashore in Cancun is called sargassum or sometimes referred to as sargasso.

Sargassum is a brown alga that naturally grows in the warm, shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Sargassum can float to the top of the ocean, where it remains on the water’s surface. The growth of Sargassum is a natural phenomenon, and until recently, the Sargassum seaweed generally stayed in the Atlantic Ocean, in an area called the Sargassum Sea.

The sargassum floating on the surface of the ocean serves as a home for all sorts of animals, from eels to sea turtles. Now, due to man-made climate change, sargassum is all over the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea, and has also been found in the waters off South America.

A person rakes seaweed on a sunny beach with clear blue water, boats in the distance, and a floating barrier nearby.

Why is there seaweed in Cancun?

Over the past decade, Cancun has experienced a significant increase in the amount of seaweed that washes onto its beaches.

The seaweed travels from its natural home in the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean due to changes in ocean currents, due to climate change, and warming ocean water temperatures.

The worldwide destruction of mangroves also contributes to the arrival of sargassum in Cancun. Sargassum would naturally arrive in mangroves and stay there.

Now, with so many mangroves being developed into commercial areas, the seaweed continues to float in the water, ending up in Cancun and the rest of Quintana Roo.

Why is seaweed in Cancun increasing?

Sargassum first washed onto the beaches of Cancun and the Riviera Maya in 2013. Since then, every year has seen sargassum, with the amount fluctuating.

Although the amount of seaweed on any given beach varies by year, experts agree there is always more sargassum than before.

No one knows exactly why the amount of seaweed in Cancun is increasing; however, scientists agree it is due to man-made climate change.

Scientists believe that changing ocean currents and rising water temperatures contribute to the phenomenon. They also believe that the use of fertilizers and chemicals aids in the growth of this brown algae.

What causes the seaweed problem in Cancun?

The seaweed problem in Cancun is due to global climate change. Climate change, shifts in ocean currents, and rising ocean temperatures have led to the arrival of sargassum in Cancun.

Large amounts of seaweed floating on the ocean and piling up on Cancun beaches cause significant problems for Quintana Roo’s primary industry, the tourism industry. People are quick to post pictures of seaweed on beaches, which creates a negative image of the destination.

People are understandably hesitant to book beach vacations if they are unsure when they might encounter seaweed.

Not only is it ugly to look at, but large patches of seaweed that are not removed by hotel staff or government workers begin to smell bad as they dry in the sun.

Sargassum is not only a problem for the tourism industry, but also for the ocean. Large blankets of sargassum that float on the ocean surface can reduce the amount of light that goes into the ocean and oxygen levels.

This can also harm delicate coral reef systems. In many areas, people use heavy machinery to remove sargassum from beaches, which can be destructive.

In recent years, there have been reports of turtles that got stuck in sargassum or had a hard time digging their nests due to the seaweed on the beach.

Things to do when there is Seaweed in Cancun

It can be a disappointment to find out there is seaweed outside your hotel or at your favorite beach in Cancun. The seaweed situation changes fast in Cancun, and you may be lucky to have seaweed one day, and a relatively clear ocean the next.

If you have the misfortune of having days with lots of seaweed, there is still plenty to do in Cancun.

➡️ Find a beach with less or no Sargasso

If you are set on enjoying beautiful beach days, even in seaweed season, you will need to be willing to move around a bit.

The wind direction and ocean currents affect how much seaweed ends up on a beach, and you can usually find sargassum-free beaches.

You can take a ferry across to Isla Mujeres. The beach on the north end of the island is almost always seaweed-free, and a beautiful spot to spend the day.

If you want to stay local in Cancun, try visiting Playa Mujeres, in the northern hotel zone. The beach’s northern location helps keep it seaweed-free.

    Cozumel coast drone views
    Cozumel

➡️ Take a day trip to Cozumel

If you are willing to go even further, you can make a day trip to Cozumel.

The west side of the island rarely gets any seaweed. There is a constant current that pushes the seaweed through the Yucatan Channel.

This current, paired with favorable wind directions, makes the west side seaweed-free almost always. You can spend a day at a beach club, or book a snorkel tour, and enjoy the clear water.

Days when there is seaweed on the beach are a great time to head into the jungle, visit some ruins, and then a cenote.

    ➡️ Visit archeological sites

There are several great archeological sites to visit on the Yucatan Peninsula, including Chichen Itza, Coba, and Tulum.

You can either rent a car and go by yourself or book a tour. However you go to the ruins, a great post-ruin activity is to cool off in a refreshing cenote. Cenotes are freshwater pools that connect the surface to underground river systems.

The freshwater is usually 75 degrees year-round, making it the perfect spot to cool off after a hike. Cenotes are located all throughout the jungle, making them free from any seaweed.

    ➡️ Take a sailing tour

If there is seaweed on the beach, but the ocean is free from large patches of sargassum, you can book a catamaran or snorkeling tour.

Check out the seaweed forecast, but it is not uncommon that the seaweed is on the beach, but taking a boat out into the ocean to visit the reef will get you away from the sargassum.

There are many adventure parks in the area that you can visit to avoid seaweed.

    ➡️ Enjoy your hotel pool

If all else fails, you can always spend the day lounging by your hotel’s pool. Some of the hotels have amazing pools and even waterparks for the kids and adults, which could be a great alternative to the beach.

Other hotels even have suites with private plunge pools as well.

➡️ Take a Tour to Isla Contoy

Isla Contoy is a nature reserve located to the northeast of Cancun.

There is a shallow reef just off the shore of the island, and here you can find different fish, rays, and sea turtles.

There is no development on Isla Contoy, and the only way to get there is with a day tour. Similar to Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy’s beaches are free from seaweed due to their position in the ocean and the currents that keep the seaweed from washing ashore.

    ➡️ Enjoy the refreshing cenotes

Cenotes are natural sinkholes that the Yucatan Peninsula is famous for. They are scattered around the peninsula, with major concentrations in the Yucatan state and along the Riviera Maya, and they keep finding new ones. They have counted around 6000 Cenotes! Can you believe it?

The closest to Cancun is located in Puerto Morelos, just a 30-minute drive from Cancun. The cenotes near Cancun are a great alternative to the Cancun beach when Sargassum infests it.

You can get there on your own or join one of the amazing Cenote tours available from your hotel.

How locals handle seaweed in Cancun

Obviously, the arrival of Sargassum ten years ago has been a big problem for Cancun. Everyone, from the government to hotels to beach clubs, has been affected by the seaweed situation.

Most hotels and beachfront businesses work hard to clean up the sargassum that washes ashore.

You will see everything from small machines that scoop up the sargassum to hardworking people raking it up to make the beach pleasant for tourists.

The Mexican government, along with the Navy, has been working to develop plans to stop sargassum before it washes ashore.

As the government tries to come up with ways to stop sargassum before it hits the beach, many locals are inventing ways to put the sargassum to use.

A local girl started a company that makes paper products, including notebooks from sargassum. People are working to make bricks and other building materials out of the sargassum, too.

Sargassum is also being used to create eco-friendly fertilizers. While this does not reduce the amount of sargassum, it does bring awareness to the problem and puts the seaweed to good use.

    Best Hotels without Seaweed

All hotels in Cancun will work hard to keep their beaches clean of sargassum. However, some hotels have advantages due to shore topography and the typical wind and current directions that keep them free from seaweed, while other properties struggle with being covered with it.

Simply put, some locations are more prone to being hit by seaweed than others.

While there is no way to guarantee that a hotel will be seaweed-free, the location of these hotels makes them a good bet.

    Cancun Seaweed Season

Experts who study the sargassum situation in the Atlantic and the Caribbean Coast are good at predicting how much seaweed we can expect every year.

They are not able to precisely say where the seaweed will wash ashore, but they monitor many different factors, including studying large patches of sargassum, and can tell us when we should expect a lot of seaweed.

Unfortunately, they predict that it will be another year with lots of seaweed washing ashore.

The seaweed season is expected to start earlier than usual, with seaweed hitting the beaches by March or April.

There are a few “sargassum islands” floating parallel to the coast of the Riviera Maya, and winds can push some of this seaweed toward the shore.

The good news is that local government officials are preparing ways to deal with the seaweed before it arrives.

    Sargassum seaweed map

When seaweed arrives in the state of Quintana Roo, it does not affect all the beaches equally. Ocean currents, wind direction, and shore topography make some beaches more protected from sargassum, while others get hit hard.

The Facebook group Red de Monitoreo de Sargasso Quintana Roo frequently posts a map showing the state’s most popular beaches and grading them by the amount of seaweed they have. So, if you want to know the seaweed situation in Cancun right now, as you read this, please check that Facebook page.

Also, make sure you check them right before your trip so you have the latest information.

Beaches with a blue dot are seaweed-free, and a green dot represents a very low amount of seaweed. The color code progresses from yellow to orange to red, indicating beaches with excessive seaweed.

If you are here, or planning to come, during seaweed season, the map is a great resource to help you find beaches to spend the day that have less ( or no ) seaweed. It will also help you have a visual understanding of what areas get hit the hardest by seaweed.

How bad is the seaweed in Cancun?

After reading this article, you are probably left wondering…how bad is the seaweed in Cancun? That is a hard question to answer since the conditions change frequently. In the summer, the sargassum situation is a problem in Cancun.

It requires a lot of resources, including machines and human labor, to keep the beaches clear from seaweed so that tourists can enjoy their vacation.

The government and everyone who works in tourism worry that without a clear plan of action, the seaweed will affect the tourism industry.

The good news is that there are still several months of the year when you can expect clear beaches, and even during sargassum season, people are working hard to clear the beach.

    Is Cancun’s Seaweed harmful?

Sargassum on its own is not harmful to humans; however, when it floats in the hot sun or washes up onto the beach, it can become home to microbes and bacteria. Many different species of fish use the sargassum patches as breeding areas and lay their eggs.

All of these things can cause irritation and itching when they come in contact with our skin. Swimming in the sargassum is not directly harmful or dangerous, but can cause bothersome rashes for people.

Almost everyone finds swimming in sargassum-filled water unpleasant, regardless of whether it gives you a rash or not.

When sargassum washes onto the shore in large amounts and begins to break down in the hot sun it can release hydrogen sulfide gas.

Hydrogen sulfide gas smells like rotten eggs, and directly breathing it in can cause itchy eyes. In extreme cases, it can even cause nausea.

Unfortunately, sargassum is not the only thing that floats in the ocean and washes ashore. The ocean is home to countless pieces of plastic trash, which get caught in the sargassum.

Seaweed that washes ashore can have pieces of plastic, which can be sharp if stepped on.

If you visit a beach with an excessive amount of seaweed, take care to watch your step.

A picturesque beach features clear turquoise waters, a sand barrier, and scattered people in the distance, under a bright, sunny sky.
On some beaches, they built this net to prevent seaweed from getting to the beach

When does the Cancun seaweed season start?

Seaweed in Cancun generally begins to appear in May. The northern winds that blow during the winter months are believed to help keep the sargassum away and the beaches clear during the winter months of November to May.

This year, small amounts of sargassum are expected to wash ashore in isolated incidents as early as March.

Experts believe that the Sargassum Islands, located to the east of Quintana Roo, will contribute to some sargassum arriving earlier than usual.

The Mexican Navy has made efforts to trap sargassum at sea to prevent it from washing ashore. Unfortunately, these efforts are not as successful as hoped, and they often resort to cleaning the beaches after seaweed arrives.

How long does the Cancun seaweed season typically last?

The Cancun seaweed season typically lasts from April or May until September or October. Some experts say the season ends in August, although there can still be seaweed through the early fall months.

The warm, summer months typically have the wind blowing from the southeast.

These winds and ocean currents carry the sargassum into the waters off Quintana Roo and onto the beaches of Cancun and the cities of the Riviera Maya.

How to combat the seaweed in Cancun?

The state and local governments as well as hotel and business managers are doing everything they can to keep sargassum off the beach. They do not want it to ruin anyone’s vacation or cause people to cancel their trips to the area.

The Mexican navy has tried to capture sargassum at sea before it washes ashore. Unfortunately, this is not always very successful. Local governments have been experimenting with building barriers off the shore to keep sargassum from washing onto the beach.

When these actions fail and seaweed does end up on the beach, crews of people are working hard to remove the sargassum.

During seaweed season workers begin removing sargassum early in the morning to leave clean beaches for visitors.

    Current Seaweed Conditions in Cancun

At the time of writing this article, the Cancun beaches do not have sargassum. It has been a windy January, with some strange wind blowing from the southeast; however, the water is clear.

With the strong winds, small amounts of sargassum have ended up on the beach, but the water is clear for swimming.

If you want to see current seaweed conditions, consider joining the Sargasso Monitoring Network on the Riviera Maya Facebook page.

People are constantly posting their current beach pictures, so you can get a great idea of how the seaweed situation looks.

3 Best Cancun beaches that are seaweed-free

If you want to enjoy a day at the beach with white sand and clean water, check out these three beaches.

    🔵 Isla Mujeres

A serene beach scene with turquoise water, white sand, and palm trees. People stroll along the shore, and white lounge chairs are set up under the trees. A few boats float in the distance, possibly heading from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.

Even if most of the beaches in Cancun have seaweed, you can find beautiful, sargassum-free beaches on Isla Mujeres.

Isla Mujeres has the good luck of hardly ever getting seaweed. Take the short ferry ride across and enjoy a day at the beach.

The famous Playa Norte has been named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and hardly ever gets seaweed!  Playa Norte is a ten-minute walk from the ferry dock, or you can take a short taxi ride.

There are several beach clubs you can choose from, or just find a spot in the sand to hang out. The beach is full of white sand, and the water is a beautiful turquoise color.

    🔵 Isla Blanca

    Isla Blanca Aerial View

Isla Blanca is not actually an island; it is a long, thin peninsula that runs north of Cancun. This thin stretch of land is covered in white, sandy beaches, with the turquoise water of the Caribbean to one side and Laguna Chacmoch to the other.

For only being 20 kilometers from Cancun, you will feel like you are in a different world. Here you will find undeveloped beaches, except for a few rustic beach restaurants.

You can get here with a rental car; just look for parking spaces along the peninsula.

Some beach restaurants will charge a small fee to park your car and access the beach through their property. Or, you can take a taxi here. Just remember, set the rate with the driver before.

There is not great cell phone service, so make sure to plan your return. Minimal seaweed arrives at Isla Blanca due to the direction of the ocean currents and its location north of Cancun.

    🔵 Playa Mujeres

Playa Mujeres is located to the north of Cancun’s hotel zone, just opposite Isla Mujeres. This stretch of beach is full of luxury resorts, without public beaches.

The southern hotel zone blocks a lot of the sargassum from reaching the shores of Playa Mujeres, leaving the beaches clean. The best way to enjoy this area is to book your stay at one of the resorts.

How to know the seaweed forecast

Sargassum experts can predict months ahead of time what the general seaweed situation will be like; however, they cannot pinpoint exactly where and when the seaweed will hit.

When you visit Cancun, you can get up-to-date seaweed information online.

The seaweed conditions can change quickly, with everyday benign differences, so use these resources to plan your vacation:

    Website

The website sargassummonitoring.com is a great resource to see pictures of what area beaches actually look like. Y

ou can zoom into Cancun and see what several different locations look like. The pictures are constantly being updated, so you can get a real-time update on the seaweed situation.

    Live video footage

If you would rather see video footage of Cancun beaches, there are a few sites you can check out. Livebeaches.com has beach webcams that you can check out.

They have webcams at several different area resorts, and you can use this information to get a good sense of how the different areas look.

    Best time to visit Cancun

For many visitors, the winter months are the best time to visit Cancun. These months have dry weather, mild heat, and less humidity, and they are when the beaches are typically free from seaweed.

The months of November to March have comfortable temperatures that let you do everything from hanging out on the beach to exploring ruins without overheating, but the water is still warm enough to enjoy swimming and snorkeling.

March and April are spring breakers months so party lovers will find a lot of fun events and festivals but if you are not into that, you can still find tranquil beaches and have a peaceful vacation. Solo travelers also have a blast in Cancun.

The occasional cold front with north wind keeps the sargassum away from the beaches. The one downside to coming in the winter is the crowds- it is not a secret that Cancun is a great spot to be in the winter! These months are the peak tourist season, and hotels and tours fill up fast.

The summer months have hotter, wetter, and more humid weather. People who love spending time in the water may not mind the heat, and the temperatures are great for spending a day in the ocean or a cenote.

That said, these are the months when sargassum is most likely to be a problem. A great advantage of coming in the summer months is the lower number of tourists.

You will have a better chance of finding great deals on hotels.  In my opinion, though, spring is the best time to visit Cancun because you find the best of both season and less chance to see sargassum weed.

What measures are being taken to address the Cancun seaweed

The state and local governments, as well as hotel and business managers, are doing everything they can to keep sargassum off the beach.

They do not want it to ruin anyone’s vacation or cause people to cancel their trips to the area.

The Mexican navy tried to capture sargassum at sea before it washed ashore. Unfortunately, this is not always very successful. Local governments have been experimenting with building barriers off the shore to keep sargassum from washing onto the beach.

When these actions fail and seaweed does end up on the beach, crews work hard to remove the sargassum. During seaweed season, workers begin removing sargassum early in the morning to leave clean beaches for visitors.

Tourists and locals alike want to find a solution to the seaweed problem. Every season that seaweed arrives, experts experiment with new ways to combat it.

    Seaweed in Cancun FAQs

When should you avoid seaweed in Cancun?

If you want the lowest chance of having seaweed washed ashore or floating on the ocean during your vacation, travel to Cancun during the winter months of November to March. You will have the lowest chance of encountering seaweed during these months.

Do all beaches in Cancun have seaweed?

No. Ocean currents, wind direction, and shoreline topography all affect how much seaweed a beach will have.

Some areas, such as beaches on the north end of the Cancun Hotel Zone have the advantage that ocean currents and wind direction keep the majority of the seaweed off their beaches. The Sargassum monitoring map will help you see which beaches have the most sargassum.

Does Cancun have a seaweed problem?

Over the last decade, large amounts of seaweed have washed ashore in Cancún. This is a problem for an area that is known for pristine white sand beaches and turquoise water.

The problem extends beyond the potential for economic loss if tourists cease visiting during the seaweed months. The large quantities of sargassum pose environmental threats too.

So, yes, Cancun does have a seaweed problem that it is working hard to solve.

    Cancun playa chaacmol people
    Playa Chaac Mol

What month does Cancun have seaweed?

Cancun’s seaweed season is typically from April or May to October. Within these months, the amount of seaweed, if there is any, changes daily.

Where to stay in Mexico to avoid seaweed?

If you want to avoid the chance of having seaweed on the beach during your vacation, consider staying on Isla Mujeres or Cozumel.

Isla Mujeres rarely gets any seaweed on its beaches. The west coast of Cozumel, where the hotels are located, has strong currents and wind protection that make it generally seaweed-free.

Is the ocean water clear in Cancun?

When sargassum arrives, large patches of it can float on the ocean surface near the shore before washing onto the beach.

Wind and ocean currents affect when this happens and how long it will stay floating. Once the seaweed patches wash ashore, the water is clean for swimming.

Can you swim in sargassum seaweed?

You can, but many people prefer not to. The microbes and bacteria that live on in the seaweed can give some people a rash or make their skin itch. For most others, it is simply an unpleasant sensation.

How do you prevent sargassum seaweed?

As with most things related to climate change, there is no easy solution to prevent sargassum.

As experts learn more about why there is more sargassum, they will be able to recommend ways to reduce our carbon footprint and slow seaweed growth.

For now, you can support businesses developing innovative ways to use seaweed. If you are local, you can volunteer at public beach cleanups.

Does Cancun still have a seaweed problem?

Yes, during the summer months, Cancun gets a large amount of seaweed to its shores. The summer months are the worst for seaweed. This summer, I am still expecting a lot of seaweed as well.

Seaweed Season in Cancun, Mexico: Final Thoughts

No one wants to plan a Cancun beach vacation and arrive to find seaweed floating in the water in front of your hotel or washed onto the beach.

Unfortunately, Cancun has battled with the arrival of sargassum during the summer for the last ten years.

The great news is that by now, there are plenty of resources available to help you plan a vacation in an area of Cancun that is less likely to be affected by seaweed.

When the seaweed arrives, the local government and businesses work hard to clean the beaches as quickly as possible.

You can always plan excursions into the jungle, visit ruins, and swim in a cenote, to avoid any chance of seeing seaweed.

Seaweed is not a welcome guest on anyone’s vacation; however, its arrival does not have to ruin your time in Cancun.

City vibes or jungle escapes? In this guide, I’ll break down the real differences to help you figure out which destination actually suits your style, so you don’t waste your vacation on the wrong beach.

Cancun vs Riviera Maya | At a glance

Cancún is a city divided into the downtown and hotel zones. The hotel zone has around 100 different hotels and countless restaurants.

You can stroll around the hotel zone, shop, and find tourist attractions.

You can take a bus or a taxi into the downtown area to find local food vendors. In comparison with the size of Cancun, the towns in the Riviera Maya are smaller.

They typically have a more laid-back feel. The towns in the Riviera Maya are not separated into hotel zones, and where the locals live in the same way as in Cancun.

Cancun is famous for its high-energy party scene. You can leave your hotel and find plenty of places to party in the hotel zone.

In recent years ,Playa del Carmen and Tulum’s party scene has grown, with electronic music festivals.

If you are not staying directly in Playa del Carmen or Tulum, you will need to take a taxi to get into town to experience the nightlife.

Smaller towns in the Riviera Maya will not have that energetic nightlife.

For many people, it’s hard to beat the convenience of staying in Cancún. The airport is a short distance from the hotel zone.

Your plane can land, and you can be on the beach within an hour. Towns in the Riviera Maya take a bit longer to get to.

Aerial view of a coastal city with high-rise buildings along a sandy beach and turquoise ocean, stretching towards the horizon under a blue sky with scattered clouds—perfect for Cancun activities for couples looking to enjoy stunning scenery together.

Cancun vs Riviera Maya | Location

As I explain in a more detailed post on the distance between Cancun and the Riviera Maya, Cancun is located on the north side of the state of Quintana Roo while the Riviera Maya is a stretch of coast that begins in Puerto Morelos, 30 miles south of Cancun all the way to Sian Kaan biosphere, 120 miles south of Puerto Morelos.

So while when we talk about Cancun we refer to the city of Cancun, the Riviera Maya is a geographical area that includes the big cities of Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum and the villages in between them.

Cancun vs Riviera Maya | Things to do

No matter where you end up staying in Mexico, there are lots of fun things to do in Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and from one place to the other.

The two locations are so close that no matter where you are staying you can visit the entire area on a day trip.

You will find great beaches to relax on in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. This area is famous for its crystal clear blue water, but what is underneath is truly amazing.

The Meso-American Barrier Reef runs just off the coast of the Riviera Maya and Cancun. It is part of the second-largest barrier reef system in the world.

You can snorkel or scuba dive and will be treated to views of a variety of corals and sponges. The reefs are home to a ton of marine life, including sea turtles, sharks, and countless, colorful reef fish.

All over the Yucatan Peninsula, you can find cenotes. Cenotes are freshwater pools, or sinkholes, that connect the surface to an extensive underwater river system.

Some cenotes are open, like large pools. Other cenotes have large overhead environments that you can snorkel or scuba dive in.

If you want to stay on land, consider visiting the Maya ruins. There are several archaeological sites you can visit near Cancun and the Riviera Maya, including Chichen Itza, Coba, and Tulum.

You can book one of the tours suggested below and learn about how the ancient Maya civilization lived.

Cancun vs Riviera Maya | Best beaches

Deciding which destination between Cancun and the Riviera Maya has the best beaches is a difficult task. They are all spectacular. However, the main differences refer more to how easy it is to get in the water and how crowded they are.

On weekends and during festivities, it is always crowded. If you prefer to avoid crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or on weekdays, such as Sundays.

In general, the beaches in the Riviera Maya are all very much swimmable with no particular risks of currents, with some exceptions.

Some of the Cancun beaches, though, can be somewhat dangerous to swim because of the undertow currents so make sure you watch the flags on the beach and if it’s yellow or red, avoid swimming.

Playa Langosta, the beaches of Presidente Intercontinental Hyatt Ziva, and Crystal Altitude Hotel are the most swimmable in Cancun.

How long is the ride from Cancun to Riviera Maya?

It depends on where you are staying in the Riviera Maya. The Riviera Maya starts in Puerto Morelos, which is about a 20-25-minute drive from Cancun.

It continues south to Playa del Carmen, one hour from Cancun.

The next big town you will get to is Tulum, which takes about two hours from Cancun to reach.

The Riviera Maya extends south to Sian Ka’an, which is approximately a three-hour drive from Cancun.

Is it better to stay in Cancun or Riviera Maya?

It depends on what you want on a vacation! Cancun has over 70 hotels to choose from in the hotel zone. Here, you can easily access shopping, restaurants, and tourist attractions.

Cancun hotels are situated on white, sandy beaches and are conveniently located just a short drive from Cancun International Airport.

The Riviera Maya features a range of large, all-inclusive resorts that line the coast.

These resorts are separated from towns, so you will need to plan transportation if you want to leave them. You could also choose to stay in a city like Playa del Carmen or Tulum.

These areas are smaller than Cancun, and you will mix more with the locals. Both Cancun and the Riviera Maya have beautiful beaches, clear water, and fun excursions to enjoy.

The summer months of May to October are the wet and hurricane season. You can expect passing rain showers almost daily, but the sun will eventually return.

The peak of hurricane season is September and October. These months are hot and humid. Many people prefer the winter months because the temperature is not as hot and sticky.

The Ultimate Cancun 3-Day Itinerary to Explore, Relax, and Enjoy [Tips By a Local]

Cancún, Mexico, is a tropical paradise renowned for its stunning beaches, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife, and I feel fortunate to call it home.

If you have only three days to explore this stunning destination, I have compiled an itinerary to ensure you experience the best that Cancun has to offer. From ancient ruins to bustling markets and tranquil beaches, this guide has everything you need for an unforgettable trip.

Clear turquoise waters lap against a sandy beach lined with people, palm trees, and several modern buildings under a bright blue sky.

Cancun 3 days Itinerary – Day 1 – Discover Cancun’s History and Culture

Visit the Mayan Ruins of El Rey

Kick off your trip with a visit to the El Rey Ruins, an ancient Mayan archaeological site located in the heart of the Hotel Zone. Wander through the ruins and marvel at the ancient structures while learning about the history and culture of the Mayan civilization.

    • Location: Blvd. Kukulcan, Zona Hotelera
    • Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
    • Tip: Arrive early to avoid the crowds and the midday heat.

Extra tip: If you’re a morning person, or even if you’re not, it’s worth making an effort to wake up for the sunrise. If you are staying in the hotel zone on the beach side, you can watch it from your hotel room. However, if you are not, you can get to Playa Delfines, which is right opposite the El Rey ruins.

Ancient ruins of the Tulum archaeological site under a bright blue sky, bordered by palm trees and grass, showcasing historical Maya architecture.

    Stroll Through Mercado 28

Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to Mercado 28, a bustling market where you can find everything from traditional Mexican crafts to delicious street food. Bargain with vendors for unique souvenirs and sample authentic Mexican cuisine.

    • Location: Calle Xel Ha, Downtown Cancun
    • Hours: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM
    • Tip: Bring cash and practice your bargaining skills.

Extra tip: A 10-minute walk from there, you can also find Mercado 23, which is less touristy and where locals shop. It’s more authentic, and you can find many interesting shops and watch the local life.

    Mercado 28 Tulum

    Have lunch at Marbella.

Marbella Restaurant is considered one of the best spots to eat fish in Cancun. It’s always full, so we recommend making a reservation in advance to secure a spot.

Here is the Marbella Location on Google Maps, where you can find their phone number, or you can ask your hotel to make a reservation for you.

The restaurant is conveniently located on the way to your next stop.

    Enjoy Isla Blanca

Isla Blanca is a spectacular stretch of beach at the northernmost point of Cancun. You need a car to get there. There is absolutely nothing there, no bars, restaurants, or shade. This is why I have planned this stop in the afternoon after lunch so that the sun is not too strong.

Regardless, you should still remember to wear sunscreen, just in case.

It’s a great place to watch the sunset on the lagoon behind the beach. It’s usually relatively isolated, but people always enjoy a good swim or kitesurfing. Please note that the beach is not supervised.

Evening: Dinner and Nightlife in the Hotel Zone

End your first day with a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants in the Hotel Zone. Afterward, visit a local bar or nightclub to experience Cancun’s vibrant nightlife. Coco Bongo and The City are popular options for an unforgettable night out.

You can also enjoy a spectacular sunset from Plaza las Islas, where the internal platform over the lagoon side showcases spectacular views of Cancun Downtown, great for your Instagram feed as well..

My favorite restaurants are Thai and Elefanta (Indian). You can also check out Puerto Madero for a more upscale vibe, and most of all, if you love meat, Porto Santo on the lagoon is also a great option.

In my article linked above, you can find a long list of the top restaurants in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

After a morning of adventure, unwind at one of Xcaret Park’s beautiful beaches or pools. Take a leisurely swim, relax in a hammock, or snorkel in the crystal-clear waters.

    • Tip: Bring a waterproof camera to capture your underwater experiences.

Evening: Farewell Dinner in Downtown Cancun

Wrap up your Cancun adventure with a farewell dinner in Downtown Cancun. Choose from a variety of restaurants offering authentic Mexican cuisine and international dishes. Reflect on your trip while enjoying a delicious meal and soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

My favorite is La Habichuela, which offers delicious local dishes in a beautiful setting. I noticed that the restaurant was temporarily closed when I wrote this post. However, check again when you read this; if it’s open, book in advance and ask for a table in the garden.

In case it’s still closed, an alternative would be El Pocito if you want a very local place that is not fancy or if you like a more upscale environment. Cabo Cabo has great reviews and is in a fancy location in Puerto Cancun.

  • The 7 Best Luxury Hotels in Cancun for a Memorable Stay

The 7 Best Luxury Hotels in Cancun for a Memorable Stay

Dreaming of a luxurious escape to Cancun? I’ve got you covered. Thanks to my past work in the travel industry, I’ve had the chance to get to know all the incredible hotel brands featured in this post—up close and personal.

My goal is to give you an honest review to help you find the perfect luxury stay in Cancun.

Picture this: 21 kilometers of powdery white sand, turquoise water on one side, and stunning upscale resorts on the other—plus great restaurants, vibrant nightlife, and a touch of culture. That’s the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Here’s the catch—Cancun has around 300 hotels in total, and well over 200 of them are along the beach. So, choosing where to stay can feel overwhelming.

The key is figuring out what kind of experience you’re after—and what your budget looks like. Once you’ve got that clear, it’s much easier to narrow things down. Here I have included my top favorites. I hope it helps.

Cancun Luxury Hotels | Over-the-Top Beach Hotels in Cancun

    1. NIZUC Resort & Spa

NIZUC Resort & Spa opened its doors in September 2013, it has been nominated by different prestigious travel magazines such as Condè Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, and Fodor’s, as one of the best new hotels of 2014.

And I certainly second that. NIZUC Resort and Spa is for me among the best hotels in Cancun. It belongs to the already popular Mexican chain, Brisas, and is their first luxury property.

I have to say, as their first baby, they have really done an amazing job. I hope they continue to spread beauty like this!

With some 250 suites of many different types (according to location and size), 5 restaurants, and a lounge bar, the property is spread out along the coast at the very tip of the beautiful beach of Cancun, an oasis of peace and tranquillity.

What I love the most is the Balinese architecture in both the outdoor and indoor design, where the dominant colors are black and grey, and the preferred material is wood, graciously combined with the finest Mexican art.

The result is a superb, elegant, and modern style, inspiring and soothing.

I love that they have a separate beach and a suite area for adults only, so as to guarantee tranquillity. And as much as I love kids, I find this is a very intelligent and thoughtful touch.

    Hotels

The restaurants offer a variety of cuisine from all over the world: Italian, Peruvian, Thai, and of course the local Mexican cuisine in a particularly gourmet style; not to mention the elegant ambiance and great authentic dishes.

The restaurants are also open to the public, so if you are staying somewhere else and wish to have a special dinner or Sunday brunch, for which the hotel is also popular, I suggest you try this experience (reservation required).

On the beach, there are no motorized sports (a fact which I love), guaranteeing peace and quiet. They offer paddle-boarding, guided snorkeling trips, and kayaking to enjoy the beautiful beach and reefs along the coast.

It was such a beautiful day when I went to visit the hotel; the colors were just stunning and you just wanted to jump into the turquoise water.

When I left, I was literally in love and decided I really wanted to spend a couple of days there. In fact, with my birthday coming up a few weeks later I had the best excuse to exceed my usual monthly budget.

And so I did. I wasn’t lucky with the weather, but my friends and I surely made the most of our time there, taking advantage of the stunning spa.

NIZUC Resort and Spa is certainly one of a kind, in Cancun and the entire Riviera Maya, as far as the eye can tell.

    2. Atelier Playa Mujeres All Inclusive Resort

Not to be mixed up with Isla Mujeres, the beautiful island right off the coast of Cancun, Playa Mujeres is a new resort destination on the way to Isla Blanca. Here you will find some of the top luxury hotels in Cancun, and all of them offer an all-inclusive luxury service.

I choose to include the Atelier Playa Mujeres all-inclusive resort in this post for the excellent reviews it has gathered since its opening. The spectacular luxury facilities and the top-notch cuisine and service are what the guests love the most.

The hotel features include free WiFi, a private beach area, and a 24-hour front desk. Also, guests have access to a hot tub and an exceptional fitness center.

The restaurants offer a variety of culinary delights from the buffet breakfast to a choice between Italian and Asian cuisine, all with gluten-free options.

The spacious suites are equipped with the most modern facilities, including flat-screen TVs, WIFI, and views of the pool or the beach, and they all offer room service.

Atelier Playa Mujeres is also one of the best hotels in Cancun with suites with private pools, one of my favorite features in a luxury hotel.

Overall Atelier Playa Mujeres resort offers an exceptional luxury experience.

    4. Hyatt Ziva Cancun

I have to admit that although I am not a big fan of all-inclusive, I reckon that there are brands that can make the all-inclusive experience very exclusive (pun intended). HYATT Resorts is one of them.

I know the brand as I stayed in one of their resorts in Jamaica when it first opened, and it was impeccable in terms of service, culinary choices, and the quality of the rooms and amenities.

I know they keep their standard throughout their resorts, especially the new ones in Cancun.

Another thing I like about Hyatt is that they keep the family resort separate from the adults’ resort, making it suitable for kids and couples alike in search of peace and tranquility.

Private patio of a swim-up suite with two chairs facing a tranquil pool, palm trees, and the ocean beyond under a partly cloudy sky.

In this way, they can differentiate the services they offer and specifically aim to satisfy their audience in a more personalized way, almost tailoring the service.

Therefore, if you have kids, you can choose the Hyatt Ziva Cancun, which is actually located in Punta Cancun, a 5-minute walk to the night entertainment, but still repaired from the noise, so you can enjoy peace and tranquillity on one of the best stretches of beaches of Cancun.

This is why if you wish to enjoy the nightlife in Cancun, you should choose HYATT ZIVA.

Another great perk at Ziva is that it is located on a strategic point on Cancun Beach, where the beach makes a turn, which makes the hotel essentially surrounded by water – that turquoise water we all imagine when we think about the Caribbean Sea, exactly that one.

And on top of that, the huge pool located right in the middle of the resort makes it even more fascinating… and fun!

If you are planning a romantic getaway far from the crowd and the city lights, Hyatt Zilara will be your perfect choice. Located far from the hustle and bustle of the nightlife and on a beautiful stretch of beach, the hotel offers romantic rooms all with a hot tub in each room and rose petals on the bed (at additional cost, by request).

You can also ask the concierge to set up in-room dining and draw you a bubble bath with candlelight. It’s definitely the perfect getaway designed to pamper you and your special one.

Zilara also offers a full-day schedule for watersports and fitness activities to keep you fit and entertained.

It is indeed a guarantee of a high standard and outstanding service.

The Live Aqua brand is one of the high-class resorts in the group and it lives up to expectations.

The trendy resort is located in Cancún’s Hotel Zone, right in front of the popular La Isla shopping center where you can enjoy some shopping and stunning sunset views over the Lagoon Nichupte.

    ✅ CANCUN TRAVEL TIPS

    • You can pay with credit cards almost everywhere, but it’s better to travel with some local cash to pay in markets or street vendors.
    • Make sure you book your transfer before you arrive in Cancun or check the ADO bus schedule.
    • You want to know in advance what to pack and what to expect when you arrive at the Cancun airport.
    • Cancun is a great destination either for family, couples, or solo travelers. There’s everything for every taste and budget.
    • Watersport lovers will find their heaven on earth as both on the beachside or the lagoon, there are plenty of activities to choose from, including kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, kite surfing, jetpack, and much more.
    • Don’t miss visiting the local market, Mercado 23, where real life happens.
    • Cancun is still a safe city to travel to, despite some recent facts, but you still need to use common sense, as I better explain in this thorough guide on safety in Mexico.

    Culinary Delights

With six world-class restaurants, Nizuc Resort & Spa offers a culinary journey through global cuisines, all in one exquisite location. From the contemporary Mexican flavors at Ramona to the Mediterranean delights at Terra Nostra and the Asian fusion at Indochine, each dining venue presents a unique experience, led by master chefs and crafted with the freshest ingredients.

During our stay, we tried almost every restaurant. First we opted to head over to the Peruvian restaurant for our late lunch. It was supposed to be a small lunch, just to cope with our hunger until dinner, but it ended up to be a full meal, soothing not only our grumbling stomach, but literally sweeping on to all our senses.

The presentation of the dishes, starting from the entry snacks to entertain us while choosing our main course, was just a work of art, the menu choice was suitable for any tipe of foodist, even the more “challenging” one, the service was impeccable and the taste was even better than our now high demanding palates expected.

At the end of the meal the surprises were not finished. Our friendly waiter  was walking over us with a “now watch” look which we had deciphered only when he kindly pose the very well decorated plate on the table… it was holding cute little chocolate truffles … and the decoration lasted very little, I must confess.

Besides the fact that it was courtesy of the house, which already makes everything taste better for some reason, those pieces of guilty pleasure were so delicious that made you forget the diet cheating. We later found out that this courtesy gesture was going to become a constant habit  for all our meals at Nizuc

    Nizuc at night
Photo © NIZUC Resort & Spa

Our late dinner was at the fine Thai restaurant, elegant and beautiful located by a water garden where the plants and surrounding buildings were mirroring and a fire was lit up in the middle.

A tranquil zen atmosphere was around us while we chatted the night away. Eventually, we moved on to the popular Havana bar, which has a comfortable square-shaped lounge in the middle of the water garden, where we tasted a delicious Mojito.

The ambiance was quiet and soothing.

Breakfast the following morning was held in the main restaurant, a bit less formal than the other locations but with a scrumptious buffet for all sorts of diets in addition to an optional a la carte menu.

There is a reason why almost all the restaurants at NIZUC have made it to my list of the best restaurants in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Brisas Group: The Visionaries Behind Nizuc

Nizuc Resort & Spa is a proud member of the Brisas Group, a renowned hospitality company that embodies the spirit of Mexican hospitality.
