Cancún, Mexico, is a tropical paradise renowned for its stunning beaches, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife, and I feel fortunate to call it home.

If you have only three days to explore this stunning destination, I have compiled an itinerary to ensure you experience the best that Cancun has to offer. From ancient ruins to bustling markets and tranquil beaches, this guide has everything you need for an unforgettable trip.

Clear turquoise waters lap against a sandy beach lined with people, palm trees, and several modern buildings under a bright blue sky.

Cancun 3 days Itinerary – Day 1 – Discover Cancun’s History and Culture

Visit the Mayan Ruins of El Rey

Kick off your trip with a visit to the El Rey Ruins, an ancient Mayan archaeological site located in the heart of the Hotel Zone. Wander through the ruins and marvel at the ancient structures while learning about the history and culture of the Mayan civilization.

  • Location: Blvd. Kukulcan, Zona Hotelera
  • Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Tip: Arrive early to avoid the crowds and the midday heat.

Extra tip: If you’re a morning person, or even if you’re not, it’s worth making an effort to wake up for the sunrise. If you are staying in the hotel zone on the beach side, you can watch it from your hotel room. However, if you are not, you can get to Playa Delfines, which is right opposite the El Rey ruins.

Stroll Through Mercado 28

Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to Mercado 28, a bustling market where you can find everything from traditional Mexican crafts to delicious street food. Bargain with vendors for unique souvenirs and sample authentic Mexican cuisine.

  • Location: Calle Xel Ha, Downtown Cancun
  • Hours: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Tip: Bring cash and practice your bargaining skills.

Extra tip: A 10-minute walk from there, you can also find Mercado 23, which is less touristy and where locals shop. It’s more authentic, and you can find many interesting shops and watch the local life.

Have lunch at Marbella.

Marbella Restaurant is considered one of the best spots to eat fish in Cancun. It’s always full, so we recommend making a reservation in advance to secure a spot.

Here is the Marbella Location on Google Maps, where you can find their phone number, or you can ask your hotel to make a reservation for you.

The restaurant is conveniently located on the way to your next stop.

Enjoy Isla Blanca

Isla Blanca is a spectacular stretch of beach at the northernmost point of Cancun. You need a car to get there. There is absolutely nothing there, no bars, restaurants, or shade. This is why I have planned this stop in the afternoon after lunch so that the sun is not too strong.

Regardless, you should still remember to wear sunscreen, just in case.

It’s a great place to watch the sunset on the lagoon behind the beach. It’s usually relatively isolated, but people always enjoy a good swim or kitesurfing. Please note that the beach is not supervised.

Evening: Dinner and Nightlife in the Hotel Zone

End your first day with a delicious dinner at one of the many restaurants in the Hotel Zone. Afterward, visit a local bar or nightclub to experience Cancun’s vibrant nightlife. Coco Bongo and The City are popular options for an unforgettable night out.

You can also enjoy a spectacular sunset from Plaza las Islas, where the internal platform over the lagoon side showcases spectacular views of Cancun Downtown, great for your Instagram feed as well..

My favorite restaurants are Thai and Elefanta (Indian). You can also check out Puerto Madero for a more upscale vibe, and most of all, if you love meat, Porto Santo on the lagoon is also a great option.

In my article linked above, you can find a long list of the top restaurants in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Evening: Farewell Dinner in Downtown Cancun

Wrap up your Cancun adventure with a farewell dinner in Downtown Cancun. Choose from a variety of restaurants offering authentic Mexican cuisine and international dishes. Reflect on your trip while enjoying a delicious meal and soaking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

My favorite is La Habichuela, which offers delicious local dishes in a beautiful setting. I noticed that the restaurant was temporarily closed when I wrote this post. However, check again when you read this; if it’s open, book in advance and ask for a table in the garden.

In case it’s still closed, an alternative would be El Pocito if you want a very local place that is not fancy or if you like a more upscale environment. Cabo Cabo has great reviews and is in a fancy location in Puerto Cancun.

How to move around Cancun
