How to Decide Where to Stay in Tulum, Mexico

Tulum offers something for everyone, from budget-friendly stays to luxurious beachfront escapes. Whether you’re a backpacker or a luxury traveler, finding the right spot can make your trip unforgettable.

If you’re traveling on a budget, staying in Tulum Pueblo (downtown) is a great option. Here, you’ll find affordable accommodations, vibrant local vibes, and quick access to Tulum’s breathtaking natural wonders. Plus, Tulum Pueblo is home to some amazing, budget-friendly restaurants. You can still enjoy Tulum’s beautiful public beaches or spend a day at one of the trendiest beach clubs (I’ll share more about those at the end of this post).

For those seeking a more indulgent experience, Tulum Beach is the place to be. Along the stunning white sands, you’ll find luxurious resorts and boutique hotels that offer unparalleled comfort and style. That said, Tulum Pueblo isn’t just for budget travelers—it also boasts high-end properties nestled in the lush Mayan jungle, offering a unique and serene vibe.

At the same time you can also find relatively affordable hotels on Tulum Beach.

In this post, I’ll guide you through all the best options to help you find the perfect place to stay, whether you’re drawn to Tulum Beach’s luxury or Tulum Pueblo’s charm.

👉 Don’t miss the tips at the end—they’ll help you make the most of your Tulum adventure!

Tulum Beach Zone vs. Tulum Town: Where Should You Stay?

Tulum Beach Zone

The beach area of Tulum is a long stretch of luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants, boutique shops, and outdoor nightlife, including beach and jungle parties. The vibe here is trendy yet relaxed, making it a hotspot for travelers seeking a chic and stylish getaway.

However, accommodations in the beach zone come with a higher price tag simply because of their prime beachfront location. If waking up to the sound of waves and being steps away from the sand sounds like your dream vacation, this area might be perfect for you.

There is a compromise, though. There are a few relatively cheap hotels on the beach that are not luxurious but allow you. to stay on the beach without breaking the bank, and I talk about this later in this post. Keep reading or jump right in.

Tulum Town (Tulum Pueblo)

Tulum Town, also called Tulum Centro, may not have the charm of the beach zone, but it offers a more budget-friendly option with plenty of great restaurants and trendy shops. For those seeking a slightly more upscale experience, the neighborhoods of Aldea Zama and La Veleta provide a modern and elegant atmosphere, making them an attractive alternative.

If you’re planning to stay in town, having a car is highly recommended. The good news is that a new, paved road from the La Veleta neighborhood bypasses the traffic-heavy main roads, making it much easier to get around.

Tulum Beach Hotels: Are They Worth It?

Whether staying in Tulum Beach is worth it depends entirely on what you’re looking for in your trip.

Tulum is a unique beach destination in Mexico, offering travelers a mix of luxury, natural beauty, and cultural richness. The stunning beach itself, with its upscale hotels and chic beach clubs, is only part of the experience. Beyond the shoreline, Tulum boasts ancient Mayan ruins, mystical cenotes, protected areas like the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and the vibrant Tulum National Park.

What sets Tulum apart is its boho-chic culture. It’s a place where yogis, soul seekers, and style enthusiasts mingle, creating a hip, laid-back vibe that appeals to everyone from backpackers to celebrities.

While Tulum Beach was once the epitome of glamour, the town has caught up, with luxury resorts in Tulum Centro now offering a similar level of sophistication. So, is it worth staying on the beach? Absolutely—if your budget allows for it.

A Smart Approach: Splitting Your Stay

One way to get the best of both worlds is to split your trip. Spend a few nights at a beachfront hotel to fully indulge in luxury and relaxation without worrying about leaving the property. Then, switch to a boutique or mid-range hotel in Tulum Town, where you can explore the local culture, join tours to the cenotes, and discover the surrounding attractions.

This way, you’ll enjoy the full Tulum experience—beachfront bliss combined with authentic adventures and a more budget-friendly base for exploring.

How to Get from Downtown Tulum to the Beach Area

Getting from Tulum Town to the beach area is easy and doesn’t take much time. Here are the main options:

By Bike

Renting a bike is one of the most popular and eco-friendly ways to travel between downtown and the beach. The flat terrain and dedicated bike paths make it a pleasant ride, taking about 20–30 minutes.

On the main original road, you can find a convenient bike lane but I wouldn’t recommend doing it at night. It’s not safe.

By Car

If you have a rental car, it’s a quick 10–15 minute drive. Just keep in mind that parking in the beach area can be limited, especially during peak hours, so plan accordingly. There are quite a few parking spaces, but they have become quite expensive. So you should budget it.

By Taxi

Taxis are readily available in Tulum Town and can get you to the beach in about 10 minutes. Be sure to agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey, as prices can vary.

On Foot

Walking from downtown to the beach is possible but takes around an hour, depending on your starting point. While it’s a great option for those who enjoy long walks, keep in mind that the heat and humidity can make it challenging. Also, don’t do it at night.

Each option offers a convenient way to get from Tulum Town to the beach, so choose the one that best fits your style and schedule!

Best Luxury 5-Star Tulum Mexico Resorts

20. Mi Amor – Adults Only

Mi Amor is an adults-only boutique hotel on Tulum beach, featuring air-conditioning, private terraces, and plunge pools along with all the signature amenities of the Colibri Boutique Hotels chain.

The rooms are tastefully designed with couples in mind and are very refined with their minimalist interiors.

The colorfully fun decor of these rooms incites a very unique feeling within the guests while making for comfortable lodging in this luxurious haven, so you can rest assured that your stay will be an elegant one.

There is no TV in the room, but you won’t be missing it, I promise.

In fact, the room is furnished with all the most modern amenities and facilities to keep you entertained. From furnished patios or balconies, wooden floors, rain showers, and minibars to stereo sound systems, free wifi, and Nespresso machines, these rooms include everything for your comfort.

All of the rooms feature king-size beds and private terraces, and hot tubs or sea views. The ones on the ground floors add private plunge pools as well.

But if your room doesn’t have a private pool, you can take a dip in the infinity pool at the center of the hotel.

And while you’re at it, there’s also a French-Italian restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows where you can enjoy a delicious meal enjoying the views outside, or you can try the lovely terrace.

There is also a cocktail bar that serves some of the most amazing drinks, and guests also have direct access to the romantic setting of the private white-sand beach of Mi Amor.

Moreover, the hotel’s cozy spa offers various treatments and healing therapies as well. Suffice to say, the lovely atmosphere and romantic vibe of Mi Amor hotel make couples fall in love anew.

The hotel is located in the north beach zone, nestled on a rocky cliff in the tropical forest of Tulum, right beside the Caribbean coastline.

As the name implies, the hotel is the perfect place for couples going on honeymoon or simply looking for a memorable trip in the Riviera Maya.

Apart from many of Tulum’s quality bars and restaurants, the Tulum National Park is also within walking distance from the hotel. One of Tulum’s most famous beaches, the Playa Paraiso, is also just a short walk from Mi Amor.

“Lovely hotel! Fantastic design, very high level of service.

21. Hotel Bardo – Adults Only

The first downtown hotel on my list is an adults-only eco-chic lodging right off the elegant boutique hotel consisting of sophisticated villas surrounded by the refreshing greenery of Tulum’s jungle.

All the rooms of Hotel Bardo offer a romantic setting, with a private plunge pool and jungle surroundings.

All rooms are also equipped with a fridge, coffee machine, and air-conditioning, and have an additional seating area as well.

The room service is fantastic, and you will find the accommodations and environment worth a 5-star review.

The hotel also features a large outdoor swimming pool and an eco-chic open-air bar with a lounge. All the guests also have access to the terrace of the hotel, offering views of the expansive jungle area surrounding it.

Its thatched-roof restaurant is constructed of natural materials and has plenty of little plants in it as well.

The quality of the food here is really nice, the menus consist of a variety of foods and the cuisine is focused on replenishing the body with food prepared using freshest locally-sourced ingredients.

Apart from its lovely garden, the hotel also has a sauna, called Temazcal, a sound healing room, a spa, and offers its guests yoga classes as well.

Hotel Bardo is located on the outskirts of downtown Tulum, but the town center is just a few minutes of walk away from it.

I cannot wait to return!.

22. Casa Malca

A recent addition to the beach resorts of Tulum, Casa Malca is a dream hotel for couples as well as families.

With tons to offer on top of its excellent beach location, the hotel has quickly made its way to the top of Tulum’s best hotels list.

Most tourists who visit Tulum with a resort vacation on the beach in mind have heard of Casa Malca, and that’s not anything out of the ordinary for a place that used to be Pablo Escobar’s former mansion.

But the hotel isn’t only famous because of its past, it earns its reputation through a lot of great features and facilities as well.

Despite having been remodeled, Casa Malca preserves some of the most unique elements from Mexican and Mayan culture in its whitewashed design.

The hotel’s interiors feature artwork, handmade furnishings, and Mayan accents. The rustic-chic decor complements the natural beauty around the property.

The suites in Casa Malca are extremely sophisticated and luxurious. They feature floor-to-ceiling windows, upscale beds and furniture, and the amenities common with the top Tulum resorts—including air conditioning, terraces/balconies, and modern appliances.

Some of the suites offer views of the gorgeously landscaped garden. The stunning private beach area of Casa Malca features thatched-roof cabins and the hotel also has a rooftop terrace with sun loungers.

You have full access to one indoor and two outdoor pools, a bar, and a wooden-style restaurant offering local cuisines.

Breakfast is included with every stay here, secure onsite parking is provided to the guests, and free wifi is also available all across the hotel.

And, since Casa Malca is one of the few hotels on South Tulum Beach right before the biosphere reserve, the atmosphere here is filled with serenity and quietude.

The food in tulum was some of the best anywhere and everything we ate at casa Malca was no exception. Not one bad thing to say about our entire week..

23. Be Tulum Beach & Spa Resort

Be Tulum Room

The final entry on my list, Be Tulum Beach & Spa Resort, is the definition of luxury with its design rooms and private villas.

It’s so luxurious that, if you want to experience the most exclusive and perfect beach vacation in Tulum, this would be the place I’d recommend.

Nestled in the jungle only a few steps from the beach, the lodgings in Be Tulum offer carefully designed suites and villas.

There are more than enough facilities to make these accommodations stylish and upscale while also giving them a touch of homelike comfort.

Other than the usual amenities like air-conditioning, internet, and private bathrooms available in all of its 64 lodging options, the suites include balconies, safe deposit boxes, iPod docks, and some even come with private pools or hot tubs.

When it comes to onsite restaurants and bars, Be Tulum has so many of its own. The hotel has a total of 4 restaurants serving delicious food and specializing in different kinds of cuisines.

Then there are the numerous bars of Be Tulum to delight your tastebuds with flavorful drinks.

The hotel also has a couple of outdoor pools, a thriving garden reflecting the jungle beauty around the property, and free secure parking.

Beach equipment is also available, and the wellness center on-site has great spa treatments for an extra charge.

Be Tulum is technically adults-only, but anyone above the age of 13 can lodge here so that’s not a concern for most people who want to enjoy an unforgettable stay in this unique hotel.

Be Tulum is also the perfect hotel to end a list of the best beach hotels in Tulum. So, I hope you found just the right luxury hotel on Tulum’s beaches for your next stay.

24. Ma’xanab Tulum

Ma’xanab is a relatively new addition to the luxury hotels of Tulum, but don’t let that make you think any less of it.

The hotel boasts a reputation for providing guests with one of the best stays in Tulum.

The 5-star hotel has fully air-conditioned rooms and all the other amenities to make your stay pleasurable.

The ambiance of this boutique hotel is very relaxing and laid-back, so it’s perfect for a peaceful retreat with direct access to the beach.

You won’t have to worry about noisy parties or too many crowds while enjoying the serene atmosphere of the hotel.

The hotel boasts an outdoor swimming pool and has a dedicated fitness center as well.

Moreover, its range of vegan foods, alongside the delicious Mexican and international cuisine, is a treat to the self.

Although, it’s worth mentioning here that the price for food and drinks is a tad bit higher, it’s justified by the taste and quality.

Ma’xanab is perfect for couples looking for a romantic excursion in one of Tulum’s most unforgettable nooks.

All the suites offer jungle or garden views, while the terrace garden of the hotel is a sight on its own.

Located in one of the best areas in Tulum, the hotel is just 150 meters from South Tulum Beach. The Tulum Archeological Site is just 10 kilometers from it, while the Tulum National Park is just 3 kilometers away.
